- VOYAGER DEMONSTRATES INTERACTIVE VIDEODISCS AND SOFTWARE AT WORLD PREMIERE OF
- NEW SONY PLAYER
-
- The Voyager Company (Santa Monica, CA) joins Sony in introducing an important
- new Sony laserdisc player at the Voyager booth during MacWorld in Boston. The
- Sony MDP-1100 presents consumers with an attractive and unique combination of
- features, making it an ideal player for use in conjunction with interactive
- videodisc software.
-
- "This new player combines the digital audio found in consumer players with the
- computer interface capabilities of industrial players," said Robert Stein, a
- Voyager partner. "The introduction of the MDP-1100 marks the end of a dichotomy
- that has frustrated player purchasers for over a decade." Voyager will demo
- interactive laserdisc and software products on Sony MDP-1100 players at the
- annual Boston show.
-
- The MDP-1100 is the first disc player that allows users to take full advantage
- of the high-quality sound, graphics, and interactivity of Voyager products.
- "Sony's new player finally lets consumers access all the great features we've
- built into our products for the past seven years," Mr. Stein noted. "Our
- Criterion Collection of classic films has been remastered with digital sound,
- and many of our interactive discs and software are musically-oriented; the dual
- digital audio playback and computer interface capabilities of the MDP-1100
- represent a real breakthrough."
-
- The MDP-1100, scheduled to ship in late August, was developed by Sony
- Multimedia Systems, a division of Sony Corporation of America's Business and
- Professional Group. The new player supports videodiscs and digital audio CDs,
- offering an easy-to-use RS-232 computer interface, infrared control, and
- bar-code programming capabilities. It plays 12" and 8" videodiscs, 5" and 3"
- digital audio CDs, and 5" CDV discs. Standard video, audio, and RF outputs mean
- that the MDP-1100 can be connected simultaneously to a computer, a stereo, and
- a monitor or TV set.
-
- The first player to combine all of these features of laserdisc technology, it
- has a suggested retail price of $795. This combination of low price and useful
- features is expected to make the MDP-1100 a vital part of interactive media
- systems in the home, the classroom, and the office.
-
- At MacWorld, Voyager will demonstrate several of its interactive videodisc
- software programs, including the new Mozart: The "Dissonant" Quartet, on the
- Sony machines. Developed by Robert Winter, author of several of Voyager's
- award-winning CD Companions, Mozart: The "Dissonant" Quartet combines a CAV
- laserdisc with Macintosh-based computer software. The result is an interactive
- audiovisual exploration of this important piece of chamber music, featuring
- still images, full motion video, text, and three complete music and narration
- soundtracks.
-
- Voyager will also show Michelangelo: Self-Portrait. This two-disc set includes
- a complete still-frame catalog of Michelangelo's work, two full-length movies,
- a first-person narrative culled from Michelangelo's letters and diaries, and a
- score crafted from the music of Monteverdi. The accompanying HyperCard software
- provides extensive linking and slide-show capabilities, an interactive
- timeline, and a point-and-click map of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
-
-
- Voyager is a publishing company exploring the uses of interactive electronic
- media. Their CD-ROM and videodisc software products use the personal computer
- to erase the arbitrary line between education and entertainment, offering
- unparalleled presentation of information, fully interactive learning, and
- exciting opportunities to exercise the imagination.
